The Ghost: A Brief History

The idea that the dead can return to haunt the living is deeply rooted in our imaginations, and for centuries ghosts have appeared in plays and poems, novels and stories, ballad-sheets and caricatures, paintings and photographs.

Susan Owens, author of The Ghost: A Cultural History (Tate Publishing) will describe some of the huge variety of ways in which Britain's artists and writers have presented ghosts, asking how their appearance and behaviour has changed over time. What do their shifting roles reveal about them - and us?

----------------------------------------

Susan is an art historian, curator and writer. Aside from ghosts, she has written or co-authored books on Christiana Rossetti, decadent interiors, natural history illustrations, watercolours, drawings and self-portraits. Formerly Curator of Paintings at the V&A, she is now freelance and lives in Suffolk.
