A captivating play by award-winning playwright Rachel Wagstaff is inspired by the life of WW1 poet Rupert Brooke and named after his much-loved sonnet The Soldier.

The play's action moves between London at outbreak of WW1, Belgium and the Aegean where Brooke served in the Royal Naval Division on his way to fight in the Gallipoli campaign, to his resting place on the Greek island of Skyros. The play references the works of several other poets of the era as well as key political events and figures, including Churchill. Brooke is played by Tom Kay who played the lead in MESH Theatre's acclaimed Journey’s End in Ypres, Belgium and in the 2018 UK tour of Birdsong.

Captivating and surprisingly modern in its treatment of warfare and relationships, it was Rachel’s first play, launching a stellar career which includes stage adaptations of Birdsong, Flowers for Mrs Harris and The Mirror Crack’d.

It is produced by MESH Theatre whose acclaimed Journey's End just completes its 3rd successive run on the battlefields of Flanders to commemorate Remembrance.
