Charity and Splendour: BSL Interpreted Architecture Walking Tour of the Old Royal Naval College with Will Palin

Saturday 12th October 2019: 14.30 to 15.30 (Please meet at the Welcome Desk in the Visitor Centre at 14.15)

Will Palin, Conservation Director and architectural historian, will lead a walking tour of the site exploring the qualities that make this one of the finest groups of baroque buildings in Europe.

This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the architectural legacy of two of Britain’s greatest architects, Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor. The classical buildings that make up the Old Royal Naval College today were built to house the Royal Hospital for Seamen, a place of refuge for retired and injured naval veterans. One of the grandest charitable projects ever conceived, the project faced many complex design challenges that required considerable skill and invention to overcome. When it was built in the first half of the eighteenth century it was one of the most experimental, bold and sometimes controversial projects of its kind in Europe.

An unmissable chance to explore this London landmark with an expert and consider how it shapes our landscape today.

British Sign Language interpretation provided by Sula Gleeson.
