A Brief History of Music

Sat 7 Jun 2025 | 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Concert 90 minutes with a 20 minute interval. 110 minutes total event run time.

“Eclectic and enjoyable… a bewildering range of instruments” English Dance and Song

‘A Brief History Of Music‘ takes in 600 years of musical history in 90 minutes! Beginning in the Middle Ages and ending up in the 20th century (and incorporating everything in between!) this fun and fast-moving show is a whistle-stop tour of Western musical history.

Featuring long forgotten songs and tunes (not to mention jokes!)  modern-day balladeers paint a vibrant and vivid picture of our musical DNA, mixing the familiar and the obscure, the raucous and the reflective and the courtly and the commonplace.

The show combines the vigour of the medieval period, the musical intricacy of the Renaissance, the grandeur of the Baroque and the pomp and bombast of Victoriana. Add to that the wit of Blackadder and 1066 And All That and the stage is set for a veritable musical feast!

Complete with a bewildering array of instruments such as virginal, rauschpfeife and lute (and that’s just the first 100 years!) ‘A Brief History of Music‘ uses tunes, songs and humour to take you on a musical journey from which you won’t want to return!

About GreenMatthews

Chris Green and Sophie Matthews are modern-day balladeers, specialising in telling stories through song.

GreenMatthews are firm believers in the age-old power of narrative song to delight contemporary audiences. Taking their cue from ancient troubadour tradition, they are 21st-century wandering players – touring their self-created shows extensively throughout the UK and Europe. Although their music and tales are rooted in the past, the performance is entirely of the 21st century, immediate and accessible to modern audiences.

About the Chapel of St Peter & St Paul

The concert takes place in the beautiful Chapel of St Peter & St Paul, part of Sir Christopher Wren’s original design for the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich.

After a devastating fire, the Chapel was rebuilt in 1779 by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. With its richly decorated ceiling, naval themes, and exceptional altarpiece painted by ‘the Raphael of America’, Benjamin West, it is evident why the Chapel is now regarded as one of the finest neo-classical interiors in existence.

The Chapel is open daily to everyone from 10am to 5pm as a place of meditation and prayer. As an active site of Christian worship, it hosts regular services, as well as recitals, concerts, and other special events.
